This week’s “Project Schedule Definition and Communication” is a vital solution.
By definition, a project schedule is a listing of a project’s milestones, activities, and deliverables, usually with intended start and finish dates.

The project schedule should reflect all of the work associated with delivering the project on time. Without a complete plan, the project manager will be unable to communicate the whole effort, in terms of cost and resources, necessary to deliver the project.

A schedule well defined for the project leverages:
- Tracking, reporting, and communicating progress.
- Ensuring that everyone is on the same page as far as tasks, dependencies, and deadlines.
- Highlighting issues and concerns, such as a lack of resources.
- Identifying task relationships.
- Monitoring progress and detect problems early.

A good schedule allows teams to communicate without ambiguity. In fact, without clear and concise communication, projects often can perform poorly.
The schedule is ultimately the tool that will determine project success. Ensuring it is communicated accurately, consistently, and entirely with all teams is the only way to maximize its potential.
